History of kilims.

Kilims; also know as “Gelim, Kelim, Gilim” in different languages, are primarily produced in Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and North Africa.Any confirmed origin or precise history isn’t known but it’s believed that it started in 7th- 11th centuries BC when flat weaving techniques started to practice in Egypt.

Nomadic tribes used to weave it with sheep wool for bedding, wall hanging or floor covering purposes. It was a utility item for nomadic tribes, during their travels, kilims could be easily rolled up or wrapped around valuable items.http://www.asht.pk

How Kilims are Made.

Decorative purposes of kilims with natural dyes and symbolic designs, started later and represents human advancement. Kilims are weaved by using the simplest techniques ever. The weave is flat rather than pile, and the color comes only from the weft, knitted in warp. For different colours in pattern, the first color is looped back and knotted off and then new color is started. Weft is always made with wool and warp is either wool or cotton.Today, Kilims are loved all over the world, not only as decorative floor piece but there are multiple ways to use a kilims.

 

Kilims are handmade, lightweight, reversible and one a kind rugs. Unique and more durable than machine made rugs due to the way they are woven. Due to the easy replaceability, machine made rugs are more likely to wear through before a handmade Kilim rug would.
